How To Manage Work Related Stress

We all experience stress from time to time, be it work related stress or general everyday stress. Sometimes it can feel like we are spinning out of control, like a hamster on a unstoppable wheel. This article will look at ways in which we can manage work related stress.

If you run your own business you will know all about the dreaded “stress” word and at times probably find it hard to switch off. Work related stress can unfortunately spill over into our personal lives and, if not addressed, can make our lives quite unbearable at times.

So How Can We Manage Work Related Stress Effectively?

First and foremost try to identify and acknowledge what is the source of the stress e.g. is it chasing up clients to pay their bills? trying to attract new business? dealing with demands from HMRC? generally sorting out the everyday running of your business? The list goes on…

Draw up a list of what you need to do to help move things forward i.e. Credit Control procedures, how to market your business, what can you realistically afford to outsource to help ease any pressures?

Take time out from your work schedule to reflect and gather your thoughts- a ten minute meditation can work wonders and there are many free relaxation apps available- or simply just go for a walk in the fresh air.

If you’re having trouble switching off when you do finally get to bed, try writing a list of the things that are causing you stress then leave these worries on the note pad. This technique is very effective when trying to slow the mind.

However tempting, try not to smoke or have a large glass of your favourite tipple because as luring as these may seem they will not help alleviate your work related stress they will actually have the opposite effect.

Don’t forget that stress if managed correctly can also have a positive impact and even help drive ideas and workflow,  so don’t expect a totally stress free life. This is not attainable.
